Water control on a National Wildlife Refuge is a balancing act. Impoundments, moist-soil units, and ditches all need regular attention to manage habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife, but the terrain that makes a refuge valuable habitat is exactly the terrain that makes it hard to work in.
This Cat 320E was built as a dedicated solution for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The base machine carries a 50-foot super long reach boom configuration, letting the operator dig and clear from a stable position while extending well beyond the reach of a standard excavator arm. This is especially useful for maintaining wide ditches and impoundment berms without constantly repositioning the machine. Mounted on Wetland Equipment's amphibious undercarriage, it moves freely between land and water across the refuge without needing dedicated access roads.
Power for the attachment side comes from a separate 200 HP auxiliary engine, which runs the buggy's 36-inch U ditcher independently of the main excavator engine. This auxiliary package provides consistent hydraulic power for cutting and reshaping channels, while the main engine remains dedicated to boom and stick functions. The result is a reliable setup designed for the sustained ditching work required in wildlife refuge maintenance.
